ESTORIL, Carcavelos, Portugal (Saturday, April 25, 2009) - Brazil's wunderkind Alejo Muniz (BRA) won the ASP WQS 6-Star Estoril Quiksilver Pro 2009 event today finishing on top of the final encounter against fellow finalist Masatoshi Ohno (JPN), clinching crucial 2500 ratings' points and a US$ 25.000 cheque, the richest winner's prize of the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS). Muniz, who went through five rounds today defeating favorites and ASP Dream Tour members Tim Boal (FRA) and Marlon Lipke (DEU) on his way to the final, secured his best result to date in Portugal and gets his 2009 ASP season going with a significant confidence boost.

Estoril Quiksilver Pro Day 4 Off, Swell on the Way for Finals

The ASP WQS 6-Star Estoril Quiksilver Pro 2009 is thus OFF for today and the remaining seventeen heats will run this weekend and some exciting off-shore thee to four waves are expected to break at Carcavelos' renowned beachbreak.

Officials have decided to call Day 4 of competition off and will reconvene Saturday, April 25, at 7.30 AM.

Pro Junior today at Guincho, back-up venue of the 2009 edition where consistent wind-blown three to five foot (1 to 1.5 meter) waves were breaking for the final day of competition. Lacomare, who came out on top of four consecutive battles to take top honours on the final day, defeated Joachim Guichard (DNK), 18, in a thirty-minute decider to clinch 1500 ratings' points and take the lead of the 2009 ASP European Junior ratings.

Pro Junior went through an action-packed day of performance with no less than thirty heats being held in good two to three foot (0.7 to 1 meter) waves at Guincho, back-up venue of the 2009 edition with light on-shore winds and rains completing the set-up. Top seeds and outsiders had to get through two rounds today and sixteen men only remain in contention for the crown. Pro Junior, an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Grade-2 Pro Junior event, kicked off today at Carcavelos, one of the best beach breaks of Estoril's coast twenty minutes away from Lisbon. Clouds and tricky two foot waves greeted the first competitors of the 2009 ASP European Junior Tour, the event launching a three-week serie of ASP events with the ASP WQS 6-Star Estoril Quiksilver Pro following the Pro Junior next week. Ten heats only were held on Day 1 of competition, the decreasing conditions forcing officials to put the event on-hold until tomorrow Saturday.

On April 17, the Estoril B! Pro Júnior opens the international surfing events in Portugal, using some of the best waves in Cascais. This event runs for three days, having as home base Carcavelos, before the world surfing championship that will be held in Estoril.

Surfing in Portugal was born in Carcavelos, famous for its powerful beach breaks. However, if the waves are not up for the quality of some of the best junior surfers in the world, the coast of Estoril has many alternatives, like Praia do Guincho.

Event starts in a couple of weeks

The World Qualifying Series stage in Estoril is less than two weeks away. The championship that is going to bring some of the best surfers in the world to the major urban area in Portugal sets off on April 21.

The Estoril Quiksilver Pro takes place just a few days after the second World Tour stop, so Portuguese Tiago Pires and Marlon Lipke are already signed up for. They are both top 45 World Tour (WT) surfers and will not lose the first six star championship in their country this year. Nevertheless, last year's event in Estoril was essential for them to qualify for the ASP World Tour, as they gathered also more public support.

The six stars WQS stage, Estoril Quiksilver Pro, in Portugal, is to be held between 21 and 26 of April. Some of the best surfers in the world will be battling it out in the famous Cascais waves. Last year, this championship was decisive for local surfers Tiago Pires and Marlon Lipke that managed to qualify for the 2009 ASP World Tour.

The perfect Estoril Coast waves are going to be the ideal setting for some of the best surfers in the world to embark on the European Leg of the WQS. This year, this championship will be held at the beginning of the season, contrarily to last year's late season event, as a perfect opportunity for the local surfers to set up a good beginning, at home.

At 14 years old, he is at present one of the most important faces of Quiksilver Portugal.
