Come the end of the 2011 season in Hawaii, each surfer counts his best 8 event results and the surfer with the most ratings points accumulated from those events will be deemed the world champion. But the world title isn't the only thing on the line; the Quiksilver Pro New York signals the transition point in the year where some of the lower ranked men on the World Tour are replaced by highly ranked surfers on the World Ranking system that rates up-and-coming surfers who are pushing to qualify for the elite World Tour through a second tier of events. The pressure will be intense to make the cut at the Quiksilver Pro New York.
