The spot of La Vaca was discovered in 2006 by two Cantabrian surfers, Óscar Gómez and Luis García, who one sunny Sunday morning decided to explore the coast from El Sardinero (Santander) to Liendres (Piélagos) in search of waves.

Less gigantic than expected, but definitely brilliant. That's the verdict of the long-awaited Quiksilver “La Vaca Gigante” contest. The cliffs of the “Cantera de Cueto”, near Santander, saw their usual peace and quiet disturbed by an enthusiastic crowd who converted them to a grandstand for Spain's biggest and most closely-watched Big Wave surfing event.
The event will feature a closed list of 24 participants who will be invited by the organization. This guarantees that some of the biggest names in European and international big-wave surfing will ride La Vaca's flanks.
The event consists of a one-day competition. The selection of the date will be done by taking into account the most favourable maritime conditions within a waiting period that starts on 10th November 2011 and lasts until 29 February 2012. La Vaca may moo any day between those dates.
